MONMOUTH, Ill. — Maryn Horn (Houston, Texas/Jersey Village) led the Penn State Behrend women’s water polo team to a 1-1 mark on the first day of the final Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III regular tournament. She scored six goals and established a new school record with 149 career goals as the Lions defeated Utica College, 15-4, and fell to host Monmouth College, 12-6.
In game one against the Pioneers of Utica, Horn buried a game-high five goals for the Lions to help them secure an 11-score victory.
Jenessa Islas-Parker (Palatine, Ill./Frema) got Behrend on the board first, notching a goal in the opening 1:16 of the contest. The Lions continued the heat by adding three more goals in the first quarter, maintaining a 4-1 edge through the first period.
In the second quarter, Horn tallied a three trick while Devon Van Rensburg (Johannesburg, South Africa/Crawford) scored a pair goals to combine for five unanswered goals for Behrend. Utica began to mount a comeback, scoring three straight goals to make the score 9-4. However, Behrend ended the short-lived run by registering a goal in the final 33 seconds of the half to push the lead back to six at halftime.
The Lions kept the Pioneers scoreless in the second half, while adding five goals themselves to top the game off at 15-4.
Horn finished the game with five goals and four steals. Islas-Parker ended with four goals, while Rensburg recorded three markers.
Lauren Wood (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) contributed in the win by making five steals while also dishing out five assists. Carson Hagood (Orlando, FL/Bishop Moore Catholic) notched three steals.
In game two against the host Scots on Monmouth, the Lions could not put together much offense in the first half. Monmouth scored seven goals in the first half, six of which came in the first quarter, whereas Behrend was only able to tally one goal.
The Lions found a groove midway through the fourth quarter, scoring three of their six total goals, but it was too late.
JoJo Gager (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa), Alison McClure (Loveland, Ohio/Milford), Wood, Horn, Rensburg and Hagood all registered goal in the match.
Horn also tallied four steals, Rensburg made recorded three and Gager made two steals. Islas-Parker dished out two assists in the game.
McClure made six saves in net for the Lions while Wood notched three saves.
