MONMOUTH, Ill. — Freshman Stephania Lopez (Chicago, Ill.) found the back of the net six times to propel the Division III No. 10-ranked Connecticut College women’s water polo team to a 17-11 victory over Grove City College. Courtesy the victory, the Camels conclude the league regular season with a 5-2 mark and will enter the 2018 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championship on Saturday-Sunday, April 14-15, at the Hallman Aquatics Center in Erie, Pa., as the No. 3 seed.
Connecticut College, which led from wire-to-wire, got back-to-back goals from senior April Anderson (Mill Valley, Calif.) and Lopez at the 7:23 and 6:44 marks of the opening quarter to seize the momentum. Lopez exploded to score three more times to give the Camels a 7-2 lead after the first frame, and sophomore Ginny McCool (Delray Beach, Fla.) scored twice in the second to make it 11-5 at the break. The Camels extended their lead to as many as eight goals on multiple occasions in the second half en route to registering their fourth straight win over a conference opponent.
By scoring six times today, Lopez finished the weekend with a team-leading 14 goals in three games. Senior Shannon Cry (Monterey, Calif.) and McCool each scored twice in the contest to aid the offense.
