GRESHAM, Ore. — Seven different student-athletes scored for No. 2-ranked/Pacific Coast Division Champion California Polytechnic State University as the Mustangs blanked Rocky Mountain Division Champion the University of Colorado, 14-0, in the opening round of the 2018 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship hosted by the University of Washington at Mt. Hood Community College.
Cal Poly jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter, tacked on four and three goals in the second and third quarters, respectively, prior to notching a pair in the fourth quarter to overpower the Buffaloes and advance into the championship tournament’s quarterfinals.
Due to the win, seven-time National Champion (2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011) Cal Poly advances into the tournament quarterfinals at 11:20 a.m. Pacific/2:20 p.m. Eastern on Saturday, May 5, against the winner of a first round meeting between the host/No. 6/Northwest Division Champion Huskies of Washington and No. 8/Mid-Atlantic Division Champion Pennsylvania State University. Colorado will take on the loser of the Washington/PSU game at 8:40 p.m. Pacific/11:40 p.m. Eastern tonight in the consolation side of the bracket.
For the Mustangs, Bree Gillis (Fr., Morgan Hill, Calif.) led all scorers with four goals, while Meagan Vail (So., Lompoc, Calif.), Taylor Best (Sr., Yorba Linda, Calif.), Maddie David (Fr., Pleasanton, Calif.) and co-Player of the Game Sydney Clark (Sr., Salinas, Calif.) each posted pairs of markers. Sanam Ghazvini (So., San Jose, Calif.) and Claudia Macedo (Sr., San Martin, Calif.) both tacked on single scores.
In cage, Sierra Sheeper (Sr., Menlo Park, Calif.) recorded seven saves to earn the win.
Co-Player of the Game Madeleine Morgan (So., Mill Valley, Calif.) turned away 14 shots in taking the loss for Colorado.
The victory marks the first shutout at the Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship since a 17-0 win by the University of California-Davis against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on March 5 during the opening round of the 2017 championship hosted by the University of Pittsburgh, in Pittsburgh, Pa.
