SZOMBATHELY, Hungary — Brown University men’s water polo freshman goalkeeper Ugo Piovan won gold with the Greece Junior National Team at the 2018 FINA Men’s Youth Water Polo World Championships in Szombathely, Hungary, on Sunday, August 19.
A native of Vouliagmeni, Greece, Piovan helped lead Greece to its first men’s youth world title and to a 7-0 record at the tournament. Piovan played the entirety of five games, making 48 saves on a .511 save percentage in those contests. In three games in the knockout rounds, he stopped 27 shots on a .529 save percentage.
In the gold-medal game, Piovan turned aside 11 shots and allowed just eight goals as Greece beat Spain, 9-8. In the semifinals, he blocked 13 shots, including two 5-meter penalty saves, as Greece topped Serbia, 9-8. The Greeks defeated Australia, 11-8, in the quarterfinals with three saves from Piovan.
Greece went 4-0 in the group stage, registering victories over host Hungary (15-12 W), Argentina (13-3 W), Russia (13-10 W) and China (18-6 W). Piovan made eight saves in the win over Hungary and 11 stops in the victory against Russia.
Piovan has previously represented Greece at the junior national level, placing eighth at the 2017 European Championships in Malta, eighth at the 2017 Mediterranean World Cup in Montenegro and second at the Balkan Games in Serbia in 2016.
