SALEM, W.Va. — Gannon University closed out a Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC)-West Region league weekend at Salem University to topping Monmouth College, 20-7, and McKendree University, 19-9.
Against Monmouth, Gannon scored 20 goals in a match for the second time this season while the defense limited the Fighting Scots to seven goals on 33 shots.
Gannon opened up a quick 4-0 lead in the first quarter with two goals from Riley Hinkley (Meshoppen, Pa./Princeton) and tallies from Jake Rehrer (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills) and Tony Squeglia (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep).
The Golden Knights outscored Monmouth 7-0 in the third quarter and Gannon added four goals in the fourth quarter for the 20-7 win.
Hinkley, Tim Baer (San Diego, Calif./Classical Academy) and Drago Marjanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/North Allegheny (Pa.)) eached scored three goals in the win as the Golden Knights scored their 20 goals on 42 shots.
Gannon went three-for-seven on power-play chances and converted for 11 of the final 12 goals in the match to improve to 6-0 all-time versus Monmouth.
Overall, Gannon has held nine opponents under 10 goals this season while scoring 10 or more in 11 matches.
Taking on McKendree in Gannon’s final match of the weekend, Zarko Sadikovic (Nis, Serbia/GTS Neimar) powered the Golden Knights with five goals.
Thomas Squeglia (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) added four goals, with Tony Squeglia (three), Marjanovic (three), Robert Bolmanski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) (two) and Jake Rehrer (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills) (two) also notching multi-score contests.
