VILLANOVA, Pa. — Paige Coughlin (Sr., Broadview Heights, Ohio) scored three times to notch Player of the Game accolades as Division III No. 3-ranked Washington University in St. Louis doubled Division III No. 6 Carnegie Mellon University, 12-6, to reach the title game of the 2019 Women’s Division III Collegiate Club Championship at Villanova University.

  • Washington University in St. Louis, which previously downed Division III No. 9 Grinnell College by a 17-2 count in the opening game of the tournament earlier in the day, clinches the Bracket A title with a 2-0 mark.  The Bears will take on the victor of Bracket B at 11:40 a.m. on Sunday, April 28, to decide the inaugural Women’s Division III Collegiate Club Champion.
  • Washington never trailed against CMU as the team ticked off back-to-back-to-back goals over the first three minutes of the opening quarter to grab a 3-0 lead.  The Bears never relinquished the lead as the Tartans pulled within 4-2 by the end of the first quarter, but was never again within a pair of Washington as the squad outscored Carnegie Mellon 2-1 in the second quarter to hold a 6-3 lead by halftime.
  • The lead ballooned to five goals in the third quarter as the Bears pulled ahead 8-3 and 9-4 before CMU punched in a goal with 48 seconds left in the frame and 6:25 to go in the fourth quarter to inch within three at 9-6.
  • However, the Bears put the contest away down the stretch finding the back of the cage with 6:02, 2:26 and 1:08 left on the clock to overwhelm Carnegie Mellon and collect a 12-6 win.
  • For Washington, Jennie Greenstein (Sr., Menlo Park, Calif.), CJ Wilson (Gr., Atlanta, Georgia/Lakesie) and Lailey Khatibloo (Fr., Seattle, Wash.) all rifled in pairs of markers to join Coughlin (three) in posting multi-goal games.  Aidan Lisker (Jr., San Francisco, Calif.), Michelle Pacheco (Jr., Evanston, Ill.) and Grace Tedder (Jr., Jonesboro, Ark.) all scored once to account for the Bears’ final tallies.
  • Tori Chen (So., San Jose, Calif.) and Greta Markey (Fr., Western Springs, Ill.) both posted hat-tricks with three goals each for the Tartans.
  • Washington shot two-for-four on man-up chances in the game, while CMU went zero-for-four on its quartet of power-play bids.
  • The loss drops Carnegie Mellon to 1-1 in Bracket A following an earlier 19-3 defeat of Division III No. 9 Grinnell College to open the tournament.  The 1-1 mark is good enough to earn CMU a date to the Third Place game as the squad will battle Division III No. 8 New York University at 10:20 a.m. on Sunday, April 28.
