CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The No. 10-ranked Harvard University men’s water polo team defeated host/Division III No. 3 the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 18-7, to remain undefeated on the season. The Crimson is now 14-0, the best start in program history.
Senior captain Charlie Owens led the Crimson in scoring with four goals in the match. Senior captain Austin Sechrest, sophomores Michael Sonsini and Alex Tsotadze and first-year Alexandru Bucur each contributed two goals in the victory. Tsotadze also tallied three helpers, while junior Ben Wagner tied a career high with three steals. Sophomore goalie Noah Hodge had 10 saves in the match.
Harvard got out to an early two goal lead in the first quarter before MIT scored on a penalty shot to get on the board. For every tally that the Engineers had in the quarter, the Crimson put away two of their own. Harvard and MIT traded scoring opportunities in the second quarter to bring the score to 9-5 at the half. Hodge stopped all of MIT’s shot attempts in the third and eight-straight goals by the Crimson in the third and fourth quarters helped seal the 18-7 victory.
