CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Brown University split two game as the Bears took down Division III No. 7-ranked the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 15-7, before falling at No. 14 Harvard University, 8-4, in the nightcap.
Both Andrew Penner and Filip Aleksic tallied three goals in the opener against the Engineers at Zesiger Pool. In the matchup against the Crimson, four different Bears scored a goal.
“We need to be more consistent if we truly want to win a championship,” said head coach Felix Mercado. “A win against MIT is good but we needed to be better against Harvard to move in the direction I want us to. I take full responsibility for it. We don’t have time to sulk, we need to get back to work,”
In the opener, Brown and MIT were tied after quarter one as Aleksic and Leo Berkman each scored goals in the period.
The second quarter saw the Bears break the game open, outscoring MIT 6-2 in the frame. A goal from Aleksic and two from Penner put Brown up 5-2 before MIT ended the run. Nick Berry, Cole Atwell and Ben Resko each scored a goal to conclude the half for the Bears.
Quarter three featured the third strikes by Aleksic and Penner. Connor Enright added two goals during the quarter as Brown pushed its lead to 12-6.
In the final eight minutes, Atwell, Thomas Hoffmeister and Ben Kirshon all scored as the Bears ran away with the win.
Joe Gallagher picked up the win in goal with 11 saves and allowing just seven goals. Gallagher also finished the game with five steals.
Across town at Blodgett Pool, Brown started slow against Harvard falling behind 3-1 in the first quarter. Penner was the lone goal scorer in the first eight minutes for Brown.
Harvard added three more goals before Brown got its second goal from Berkman. Enright scored to make the game 6-3 in favor of the Crimson, but Harvard added two more goals before Atwell scored late in the fourth to make the final score 8-4.
