WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Washington & Jefferson women’s water polo team earned a pair of victories by edging out Penn-State Behrend, 12-11, and Connecticut College, 13-11, in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) league competition on Senior Day.
Cecilia Weiss (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and Kimber Randolph (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) were both honored for their hard work and dediciation prior to the first game.
Facing the Lions of Penn State Behrend, Ryley McClellan (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) led the Presidents with four goals. Megan DePrez (Claremont, Calif. Claremont) finished with the first hat-trick of her junior season, while Laura Anthony (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and Sydney Neumann (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) recorded two goals apiece for the Presidents. Marcella Gallardo-Russell (Santa Cruz, Calif./Santa Cruz) also added a score for W&J.
W&J went on a 4-0 run in the first quarter before Behrend scored 15 seconds into the second quarter to close the deficit to 4-1. The Presidents also scored four goals in the third quarter to go into the final eight minutes with a 10-7 lead.
Weiss recorded her first win in goal during her senior season, as she made 13 saves.
Facing Connecticut College, McClellan added another four-goal effort to accompany a hat-trick by Anthony. Neumann and Anastacia Didovich (Venice, Fla./Venice) each recorded a pair of goals for the Presidents to join solo markers by Gallardo-Russell and DePrez.
Didovich scored the go-ahead goal in the first quarter and the Presidents never looked back. W&J held the lead for the remainder of the game before finishing with a narrow 13-11 win.
Weiss recorded 14 saves in goal in the game two win.
