SPRINGFIELD, Ohio/WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Connecticut College women’s water polo team dropped a 24-8 non-conference game at Wittenberg University on Friday, March 18, prior to downing Utica University, 13-6, and experiencing a 13-11 setback versus host Washington & Jefferson College to open 2022 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III-East Region competition.
Following the team’s loss on the road at Wittenberg, the Camels picked up their inaugural victory of the season by defeating Utica thanks in part to the first collegiate goals scored by Kendall Foley (So., Sammamish, Wash./Easlake) and Gicel Zuniga (So., Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk).
In the second game of the day, the Camels were defeated in a close matchup against Washington & Jefferson.
“With only one of our 14 players ever having played a college game in a shallow-deep pool, I was very impressed to see how much we improved from last night to today,” said Connecticut College head coach Matt Anderson. “We are getting better, and almost beat the home team, Washington & Jefferson, who currently sits in first in our league.”
Olivia Fechner-Lewis (Sr., Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley) and Zoe Starzenski (Fr., Montreal, Quebec/Beaconsfield) split time in goal for the Camels during the three-game stretch. Junior Maria Sell (Jr., San Mateo, Calif./Aragon) accumulated 15 goals throughout to lead the Camels offensively. Sophomore Sarah Franco (So., Weston, Conn./Weston) helped create turnovers and facilitated opportunities that led to scores.
