EMMITSBURG, Md. — The No. 21-ranked Brown University women’s water polo earned a 12-6 win over host Mount St. Mary’s University and dropped a 14-5 contest to No. 7 the University of Michigan in a split of Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division I games at the Knot Athletics and Recreation Center Complex.
“I am proud of the way the team played today,” said Felix Mercado, Head Coaching Chair for Water Polo. “Earning a split on the road is never a bad thing against two conference opponents. We will regroup and focus on getting better at practice this week.”
The Bears dropped its first game of the day, falling to the defending CWPA Champion Wolverines of Michigan.
Brown fell behind 5-0 before a goal by Dagmara Czajka got the Bears on the board halfway through the second quarter. Claire Pisani scored a few minutes later as Brown trailed 7-2 at the break.
The Bears scored the first two goals of the second half as Lily Weiser and Zoe King found the back of net. Michigan responded with two goals to push its lead back to five.
King scored Brown’s lone goal in the fourth quarter.
The Bears responded by topping Mount St. Mary’s to close out the day. Brown had five players score two goals each.
Brown fell behind 2-0 before Katie Klein found the net. Claire Poisssonier tied the game up with a goal, but the Moutaineers regained the lead at 3-2. However, Weiser found the back of the net to the the game heading into the second quarter.
The Bears started the second quarter with a run as Pisani put away a shot 30 seconds in and King added a goal to put Brown up 5-3. A goal from Sienna Berry increased Brown’s lead to three before Mount St. Mary’s ended the run. Pisani and Berry each scored another goal to end the half up 8-5.
King scored Brown’s lone goal in the third quarter as the Bears kept pace with Mount St. Mary’s to carry a 9-6 lead into the final eight minutes of regulation.
Weiser scored the first goal of the final quarter, while Klein and Czajka each added goals as Brown pulled away for the win.
