UTICA, N.Y. — The Penn State Behrend women’s water polo team went 1-1 on the first day of a Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III-East Region weekend hosted by Utica University. The Lions defeated the host Pioneers, 16-4, before dropping a 20-9 contest against Connecticut College.
Against Utica, four different players scored multiple goals led by Nic Darrell (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) with five goals Darrell also posted eight steals and two drawn kickouts, while Olivia Wright (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) tallied four goals and three assists.
Behrend held the Pioneers scoreless in the first quarter to take a 4-0 lead.
The Lions had their most productive period in the third with six goals, paced a hat-tricky from Darrell.
Julie de Deus (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Pembroke Pines Charter) and Kieffer Beckman (Wildwood, Mo./Eureka) each tallied three saves in the win.
Marley Persch (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) led with four goals and two drawn kickouts against Connecticut. Darrell also added five steals to put her two steals way from breaking the season steals record in program history set at 92.
Wright tallied two goals, while Beckman added three saves and Sarah Mancebo (Tulare, Calif./Mission Oak) posted four stops.
