BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Former University of Michigan athlete Abby Andrews scored twice on five shots as Australia slipped by Greece, 9-6, in a women’s water polo Olympics quarterfinal matchup at the Paris La Defense Arena.
Courtesy the victory, Australia advances to a semifinal clash at 1:35 p.m. Eastern/10:35 a.m. Pacific on Thursday, August 8, versus the victor of a quarterfinal matching the United States and Hungary.
Australia – which finished first in Group A title with a 4-0 mark following defeats of Hungary (15-14 W OT Shootout, August 4), Canada (10-7 W, August 2), the Netherlands (15-14 W OT Shootout, July 31) and the People’s Republic of China (7-5 W, July 27). – outscored Greece in the first (1-0), third (2-1) and fourth (3-2) quarters to hold leads of 1-0, 4-3, 6-4 and 9-6 at the conclusion of each frame, respectively.
Andrews converted on one-of-four action shots and one-one-one counterattack opportunity in the game to accompany a steal. She accounted for both her goals in the second quarter by tallying a counterattack marker with 6:39 remaining in the first half to push Australia head 2-0 prior to lining in an action shot with 21 seconds on the clock for a 4-3 margin entering halftime.
In five games, Andrews now has nine goals-on-26 shots (including a penalty shot versus Hungary) with seven steals, a pair of field blocks and three rebounds.
