CASSVILLE, W.Va. — Vasilije Marinkovic set the Mount St. Marys’ University men’s record for most saves in a single game with 25 against Long Island University in a 14-13 sudden death overtime loss as the Mountaineers went 0-2 with an earlier 14-11 loss to Gannon University at the 2024 Salem Invitational hosted by Salem University.
Competing at the The Peak Health Aquatic Center at Mylan Park, the Mountaineers gained an early lead versus Gannon in the first quarter. However, the Golden Knights responded with five goals in the second to make it 7-5 by halftime. An even contest in the third quarter saw both teams score four times each before Gannon scored three times in the fourth quarter to win the game. Goalkeeper Sherif Hosni made 12 saves in his first game of the weekend.
Chrysostomos Valavanis, Zach Fischer, Ayden Hess and Aaron Tarr each scored twice in the loss for the Mountaineers, while Michael Lemishko and Nate Valentine deposited solo markers for Mount St. Mary’s.
In the late game, Long Island built an 8-5 halftime lead prior to the Mountaineers pulled even to force overtime. However, the Sharks managed to escape with the win.
Marinkovic recorded 25 saves against LIU to establish a new single game record for Mount St. Mary’s. On offense Valavanis, Lemishko, Aidan Zieger and Tarr swished pairs of shots with Nicholas Wallace-Whitfield, Gunner Lanquist, Kacper, Fischer and Hess chipping in solo tallies.
