PROVIDENCE, RI — Host and No. 19-ranked Brown University used big third quarter to pull away en route to a 21-8 win over Division III No. 9 Johns Hopkins University. The Blue Jays fall to 5-7, while the Bears improve to 5-3.
Brown jumped out to a two-goal lead in the game’s opening two minutes before sophomore Alec Baker got Hopkins on the board at 4:51. Daniel Hadar answered Baker’s score with his second of the period to spark a three-goal Bears’ run. Trailing 4-1 to start the second, Baker got his second of the night to pull the Blue Jays back within two.
Mate Tymcyna scored just 29 seconds later to make it a 5-2 a game. Senior Ian Raley and freshman Phillip Long then scored back-to-back goals and the deficit was down to one with 4:24 to play in the quarter. Following a timeout, Brown scored three straight to take an 8-4 lead. Freshman Andrew Lee halted the run with an even strength score with just 21 ticks on the clock, but Illias Stothart got one back for the Bears and it was 9-5 at the half.
Brown came out of the half firing and outscored Hopkins, 9-1, to grab an 18-6 lead after three. Long opened the fourth quarter with a five-meter score, but the Bears answered with a Ramzi Megalli score, followed by a pair of Stothart goals and it was 21-7 with 2:42 to play. Junior Dado Soares had the final say of the game, scoring with 1:22 to account for the 21-8 final.
Long, Baker and Soares scored two goals apiece to lead the Blue Jays.
