ST. LOUS, Mo. — McKendree University Director of Athletics Anthony Francis promoted former Washington University in St. Louis men’s club athlete Alex Figueras to interim varsity men’s and women’s water polo head coach.
Figueras came to McKendree in August of 2023 when he was originally hired as the lead assistant coach of the men’s and women’s programs. Prior to McKendree, he coached with the St. Louis Area Polo Club where he instructed multiple skill levels of athletes. During the 2023 Junior Olympics, he earned a gold medal in the U18 Division as the assistant coach.
He competed on the collegiate club level with Washington University in St. Louis from 2019 through 2022, where he served as the team captain and helped the team captured the 2021 Great Lakes Division Championship and a Third Place finish at the Men’s National Collegiate Club Championship hosted at the Huntsville Aquatics Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
Prior to WashU, he spent a year at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. He helped the Sagehens get ranked as high as 15th nationally, while they won the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) title and qualified for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.
Figueras holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Washington University in St. Louis.
