BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — There is a critical and ongoing nationwide shortage of sports officials and referees for sports – including water polo. Driven by the retirement of older veterans, the post-pandemic loss of tens of thousands of officials and family/work commitments that prevent individuals from continuing to call the game, the need for a next generation of officials continues to be a pressing concern.

To assist in the continuation of the sport, the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA), in conjunction with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), actively seeks new officials to enrich the depth of referees around the nation.

Why become an official:

  • Ensuring Fair Play: They protect the integrity of the game and provide rule interpretations.
  • Promoting Good Sportsmanship: They serve as role models, teaching young athletes respect and allowing the sport to continue

Individuals interested in starting the process to become a CWPA Official should send an email with past officiating experience to office@collegiatewaterpolo.org. If an individual has no prior experience as an official, please list water polo playing/coaching experience (including dates).

First time referee’s inaugural assignments will be at the collegiate club level with a senior CWPA official on hand to provide evaluation and education. If an individual is an experienced referee, they will be evaluated by a senior referee to determine the newcomers level of ability for future assignments.
