BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — The University of Mary Washington, located in Fredericksburg, Va., inducted Evan Stiles into the institution’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2025 for his performance in both swimming and water polo at the institution.
A multi-sport standout while at Mary Washington, performing at top levels for four years in water polo and swimming, as well as three years for baseball and one for tennis, Stiles was a three-time all-state selection and three-year leading scorer for water polo. He holds the school records for most goals in a season and career.
A three-year all-conference choice in swimming, he graduated with 11 school records, and holds the distinction of claiming the first pitching victory in program history for baseball.
A 1987 graduate of Mount Vernon High School in 1987, he is believed to be the first four-sport, 12-letter athlete at Mary Washington.
The coach of Olympian/Olympic gold medalist Torri Huske, in 2024 he took over as coach of the perennial champion Washington Golf & Country Club Lightning team in the top division of the summertime Country Club Swim & Dive Association in Virginia.
The longtime head swim coach of the year-round Arlington Aquatic Club program, in addition to being the high-school head coach of the St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School private-school girls’ and boys’ teams in Alexandria (Va.), Stiles was previously head coach of Bishop O’Connell High School’s for 22 years. A former head and assistant coach for the Donaldson Run team of Arlington, he was also head coach of the Dominion Country Club League’s Mount Vernon Yacht Club squad and served as head coach of the Dowden Terrace Dolphins of the Northern Virginia Swimming League (NVSL).
