BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Casey Barragan (Jr., Commerce, Calif./La Serna) and Charlotte Newport (Jr., Baytown, Texas/Ross S. Sterling) of Division III No. 4-ranked Augustana College combined for 28 goals during a 4-0 weekend at the Macalester Invite hosted by Macalester College. For their efforts, Barragan and Newport share status as the February 19 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Player of the Week.
A six-time (February 13, February 20, March 6, March 20, April 3 and April 24) Rookie of the Week and five-time (February 20, March 6, April 3, April 24, May 8) Player of the Week honoree during the 2023 season at Augustana after transferring from Fresno State University, Barragan adds her second Player of the Week accolade of the 2024 season as she previously garnered recognition last week on February 12.
On Saturday, February 17, she scored six times and drew a trio of exclusions in a 16-8 victory over the Virginia Military Institute before racking up five goals with a drawn exclusion in an 11-8 management of Ottawa University (Ariz.). On Sunday, February 18, she capped off her weekend in St, Paul, Minn., by tallying a goal, two assists, three drawn exclusions and a steal in a 12-5 management of Occidental College. In the finale, she added another five goal performance with pairs of field blocks and drawn exclusions as Augustana upended Carthage College by a 16-2 count in a non-conference game.
A first-time weekly honor recipient from the league office, Newport contributed 12 goals, four steals and five assists during the Vikings’ run at the Macalester Invite.
Facing VMI, she chipped in a goal, an assist, a steal and a drawn exclusion prior to tacking on three goals, an assist and a steal versus Ottawa. She led the way in the Occidental win with five goals, two assists and three steals before putting up three goals and an assist against Carthage.
