BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Casey Barragan (So., Commerce, Calif./La Serna) of Division III No. 5-ranked Augustana College posted 13 goals, three drawn exclusions, an assist and a .570 shooting percentage to claim Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Tournament honors for leading the Vikings to the 2023 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championship over the weekend at Macalester College. For her performance, Barragan adds the April 24 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Player and Rookie of the Week awards to her list of accomplishments.
A six-time (February 13, February 20, March 6, March 20, April 3 and April 24) Rookie of the Week and three-time (March 6, April 3, April 24) Player of the Week honoree during her first year at Augustana after transferring from Fresno State University, she dominated play during the tournament by recording a hat-trick in an 18-6 defeat of Carthage College on Friday, April 21, prior to racking up four goals in a 12-4 defeat of the host/Division III No. 9 Macalester Scots on Saturday, April 22.
In the title game versus Division III No. 8/defending CWPA Division III Champion Austin College on Sunday, April 23, she accounted for six goals as the Vikings romped to a 16-8 victory.
Barragan and Augustana will continue the season at home in Rock Island, Ill., on Saturday-Sunday, May 6-7, as the team hosts the 2023 USA Water Polo Division III Collegiate Championship with the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship and runner-up along with CWPA Division III Championship runner-up Austin.
