BRIDGEPORT, Pa — Collegiate Water Polo Association Commissioner Dan Sharadin released the following statement regarding the effort to eliminate the minimum sponsorship requirement in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I ranks:
There is a movement among Division I Conferences to change the NCAA requirement maintaining a minimum number of sports at each institution. If successful, this effort will see countless sports teams dropped under the premise of the COVID pandemic.
I believe there are other solutions that can be explored without this drastic and most likely irreversible decision. In fact, dropping sports in many instances may actually weaken an institution’s revenue stream long-term, due to decreased enrollment.
