CAMBRIDGE, Mass.Bret Lathrope has resigned as water polo head coach/physical education and wellness instructor, as announced by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Director of Athletics Julie Soriero.

In his one season with the Engineers, Lathrope was named as the Monte Nitzkowski Distinguished National Men’s Coaching Award Winner after leading the team to the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Eastern Championship title. Finishing the season ranked No. 2 in the Division III Top 10 rankings, Lathrope was also honored as the CWPA Division III Eastern Championship Coach of the Year and the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Coach of the Year.

“I’d like to thank Julie Soriero, John Benedick and Carrie Moore for giving me the opportunity to work in DAPER,” said Lathrope. “It has been an honor to lead the men’s water polo team and work as an instructor in the Physical Education department. MIT is truly an incredible institution, and I am proud to have had the chance to work with the remarkable student-athletes here. I will always be grateful for this opportunity.”

In 2018, Lathrope coached a pair of All-America selections and guided MIT to its first NWPC Tournament win in program history as the Engineers defeated Iona College by a 16-11 final.

A 2013 graduate of the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) with a Bachelor’s degree in history, Lathrope was a four-year member of the Bruins squad that appeared in three national championship games during his career. For his career, Lathrope finished with 56 goals, including a career-high 19 as a junior in 2011.
