SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -– The Brown University women’s water polo fell versus No. 16 San Jose State University, 13-6, and host/No. 18 University of California-Santa Barbara, 14-13, in overtime to wrap-up the 2022 UC-Santa Barbara Winter Invitational.

Katie Dvonch led the Bears on the day with five goals, all coming in the defeat against UCSB. Claire Pisani finished the day with four goals.

In the Bears’ opening contest, San Jose State jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Katharine Knowles got Brown on the board. Katie Klein scored during the second period for Brown but the Spartans added two goals, increasing the lead to 7-2 at halftime.

Claire Pisani scored for Brown to open up the second half before San Jose State responded with three more goals. Sophie Golub picked up a goal for Brown to end the period. Pisani and Zoe King each scored in the final frame for Brown.

Brown faced its first overtime game of the season in a one-goal loss to the host UCSB Gauchos. Both teams scored in the first overtime but UCSB earned the lone goal in the second extra period for the win.

The game was back and forth being tied four-all after the first quarter, six-all at the second quarter and eight-all after three quarters. Pisani, Dvonch and Golub scored three-straight goals to put Brown ahead 11-8 with 2:39 left in the game. Dvonch’s fifth goal of the game put Brown back up 12-9 but UCSB scored three goals in the last 1:38 to tie the game and send it to overtime.

Pisani earned Brown’s lone goal in the overtime period.
