Brown University-vs.-Saint Francis University Scoresheet
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Carissa Perez (So., Pico Rivera, Calif./La Serna) scored three times to record a hat-trick and claim Player of the Game honors as host Brown University defended the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center with a 13-8 defeat of Saint Francis University in the final game on Day Two of the 2019 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship.
In game two of a three-game round robin series between George Washington University, Brown (20-12) and Saint Francis (10-26) to determine Fifth-to-Seventh Place in the final seven-team championship standings, the Bears put themselves in the driver’s seat by claiming a five goal win versus the Red Flash to set-up a season-concluding 9:00 a.m. clash with the Colonials on Sunday, April 28. Saint Francis, which wraps up its 2019 season with the loss, stands at 1-1 in the set as the Red Flash burned GW for a 11-7 win in the opening game on Day Two of the tournament.
Due to the pair of results, Saint Francis holds a -1 goal differential in the series. Brown (+5) can claim Fifth Place by defeating George Washington, which currently stands at -4, or by not losing by more than five goals. A loss to Brown will drop GW into the Seventh position and lock-up Sixth Place for Saint Francis.
However, a GW win will make all three teams 1-1 in the series. If GW wins by less than four goals, Brown is Fifth based on goal differential and Saint Francis remains Sixth due to the tiebreaker reverting back to head-to-head action once the tie between the three teams is broken.
Brown never trailed against the Red Flash as Maigrie McDougal (Sr., Sacramento, Calif./Rio Americano) and Katie Klein (Fr., Lafayette, Calif./Campolindo) broke the ice for the Bears by connecting on natural (7:35) and man-up (6:17) chances in the dawning moments of the first quarter.
Julia Bradford (Fr., Edinboro, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) cut Brown’s lead in half by swishing a six-on-five chance at 5:30, but Lily Keck (So., La Jolla, Calif./The Bishop’s School) connected on an even-strength shot at 2:03 to expand the Bear’s margin to a pair at 3-1.
The teams exchanged scoring blows over the remainder of the opening eight-minutes as Metzli Enriquez (So., Atwater, Calif./El Capitan) found the back of the cage for the Red Flash with 32 ticks on the clock prior to Klein curving in a connection at the 18 seconds mark as Brown exited the frame with a 4-2 lead.
The Bears’ offense continued to awaken from hibernation in the second quarter as Alli Schaum (So., San Rafael, Calif./St. Ignatius College Preparatory), Kaitlyn Cook (So., Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos) and Perez tallied back-to-back-to-back natural strikes at 5:38, 3:48 and 1:23, respectively, to build Brown’s lead to 7-2.
Saint Francis trimmed its deficit back to four prior to halftime, however, as Kelsey Gring (Jr., Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) ripped in a shot with 11 seconds left in the second quarter to make the score 7-3 after 16 minutes of play.
Following nearly four and a half minutes of scoreless water polo to start the third quarter, Brown responded as Perez (3:31) and Lexi Atwell (Jr., La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla) (2:02) made balls meet mesh to inflate the margin to 9-3.
The Red Flash countered via volleys from Gabby Garritson (So., Houston, Texas/Clear Lake) and Ani Aghakhanian (Sr., La Crescenta, Calif./Los Angeles Valley College) at 1:43 and 26 seconds, respectively, but Cook delivered a counterpoint with one second left to set the scoreboard at 10-5 going into the fourth quarter of play.
Brown and Saint Francis exchanged scoring shots over the remainder of the contest as both teams exploited holes for three goals in the fourth quarter with the Red Flash never moving within four goals for the 13-8 final score.
For Brown, Perez (three), Keck (two), Klein (two) and Cook (two) all netted multi-score games. Dagmara Czajka (Fr., San Diego, Calif./Del Norte), McDougal, Atwell and Schaum each accounted for solo strikes in support of a combined four save effort by goalies Lauren Burns (Jr., Long Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) and Marley Presiado (Fr., Newport Beach, Calif./Mater Dei).
Aghakhanian and Bradford both scored twice to key the Saint Francis attack, while Enriquez, O’Neill, Garritson and Gring all chipped in single markers. Kate Wilke (Jr., Burbank, Calif./Burroughs) took the loss with 11 saves.
