PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Brown University Athletics and Recreation is currently seeking candidates for the Assistant Coach, Women’s Water Polo position. Located in Providence, Rhode Island, our intercollegiate athletics program consists of 38 varsity teams with approximately 1,000 athletes who participate within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA Division I).
The Assistant Coach for Women’s Water Polo is a dynamic, professional development-focused role designed for an aspiring coach eager to master the complexities of collegiate program operations. This position prioritizes the technical growth of student-athletes through targeted skill-building sessions and specialized position work, while simultaneously offering a deep dive into the administrative side of the sport, including film analysis, travel logistics, and recruiting support. By working closely with the head coaching staff to execute daily practice plans and manage essential team operations, the successful candidate will gain the comprehensive experience and mentorship necessary to transition into a career in high-level athletic leadership.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- 1-2 years of coaching experience or a combination of competitive playing experience and/or coaching experience at the collegiate level.
- Enthusiasm for learning and a strong desire for professional development.
- Solid communication and organizational skills.
Job Competencies
- Strong understanding of the sport’s rules, techniques, and strategies.
- Knowledge of athlete development principles, including strength, conditioning, and skill progression.
- Familiarity with NCAA and Ivy League compliance guidelines and recruiting regulations.
- Understanding of team dynamics, sportsmanship, and athlete wellness.
- Ability to instruct athletes effectively in practices, drills, and skill development.
- Strong communication skills for providing feedback to athletes and collaborating with coaching staff.
- Organizational skills to manage practice plans, training schedules, and game preparation.
- Observation and evaluation skills to monitor athlete performance and identify development needs.
- Basic recruiting support skills, including evaluating prospective student-athletes and providing recommendations.
- Ability to support the Head Coach and First Assistant Coach in implementing training programs.
- Ability to provide constructive feedback and guidance to athletes, enhancing individual and team performance.
- Ability to work collaboratively within the coaching staff to support game strategy and player development.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and support the team in high-pressure or competitive situations.
- Ability to maintain compliance with all University and NCAA/Ivy League policies.
All division employees are required to demonstrate exemplary ethical conduct and conformance to NCAA rules and regulations; the duties of the position are to be performed in compliance with all NCAA, Ivy League rules and regulations; and any rules violations on behalf of themselves or any knowledge of violations within the division are to be reported to the compliance office and appropriate parties. Employees in coaching positions must receive annual rules education on NCAA legislation related to recruiting by the compliance office and maintain current AED/CPR and First Aid certification (certification is available at no cost through the Division).
