CLAREMONT, Calif. — Brown University women’s water polo continued its road trip through the state of California with a 9-2 win over Division III No. 6-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges and a 6-4 setback to Division III No. 1 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges at Axelrood Pool and Haldeman Pool, respectively.
On the second day of their seven-day, nine-game West Coast swing, the Bears (11-2) topped the Athenas (6-16) in their second game of the day after dropping a narrow contest to the Sagehens (9-16).
Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) totaled 16 saves on the day, making eight saves in each contest, and allowed just eight goals. Senior Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) netted four goals against CMS.
Facing Pomona-Pitzer, the Bears pulled within one goal of the Sagehens on three occasions, but Brown fell by a 6-4 final score.
After falling behind 3-0 to open the game, the Bears cut their deficit to 3-2 midway through the second quarter, to 4-3 at halftime, and to 5-4 late in the third quarter, but the host Sagehens maintained their edge throughout the contest.
Sophomore Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) scored two goals, junior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) tallied a goal and three steals, and sophomore Allison Woo (Arcadia, Calif.) netted one goal.
Burns made eight saves.
Pomona-Pitzer scored all three of the first quarter’s goals to pull ahead 3-0 before Rosas answered with the first two goals of the second quarter to bring Brown within 3-2. She scored on the inside at the 6:32 mark and converted on the power play at 3:57.
A goal from Woo with 32 seconds left in the half on the right wing on the power play off a cross-pool pass trimmed the Bears’ deficit to 4-3 at the break.
The hosts went up 5-3 with 4:55 to go in the third quarter before Heilman scored on the inside to bring the score to 5-4 with 47 seconds left in the third. Pomona-Pitzer converted a five-meter penalty shot early in the fourth quarter and did not allow a goal in the final period.
Kolokotronis scored a game-high four goals to lead Brown to a 9-2 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Axelrood Pool in its second game of the day.
The Bears led 6-1 at the half and maintained a 7-1 edge heading to the fourth quarter en route to the win over the Stags.
Burns turned aside eight shots as she paced a defense that allowed just two goals in the game.
Sophomores Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) and Rosas each tallied two goals and an assist while freshman Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) added a goal. Sophomore McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) dished out two assists.
Kolokotronis netted the game’s first two goals before Rosas scored to give Brown a 3-0 lead to start the contest. CMS answered with a goal to pull within 3-1 heading to the second quarter.
The Bears scored all three of the second stanza’s goals to take a 6-1 edge at the intermission. Rosas, Kolokotronis and McDougal scored in order in the frame.
Kolokotronis found the back of the net for the lone goal in the third quarter as Brown stretched its lead to 7-1. After a CMS marker, McDougal and Atwell closed the game’s scoring with consecutive goals.
