PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Brown University topped Division III No. 10-ranked Austin College, 14-6, and Siena College, 14-3, on the first day of the Bruno Classic at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.

“It’s good to start the weekend with two wins, but we know that we have four more games ahead of us this weekend,” said Brown head coach Felix Mercado. “We’re looking forward to getting back in the pool tomorrow and continuing to get better every day.”

Sophomore Katie Klein (Lafayette, Calif.) led the Bears with seven goals between the two games, while junior Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) tallied 10 points on four goals and six assists on the evening.

Klein scored four goals to lead Brown to a 14-6 win over Austin in the Bears’ home opener and first game at the 2020 Bruno Classic.

The Bears extended a 6-3 halftime lead into an 11-5 advantage at the end of the third quarter before closing the game with an eight-goal margin against the ’Roos.

Klein added an assist to her four goals, while Perez tallied two goals and three assists. Freshman Katie Dvonch (Seal Beach, Calif.) posted two goals and two steals, and freshman Claire Pisani (Redwood City, Calif.) netted two goals with an assist.

Juniors Kaitlyn Cook (Los Gatos, Calif.) and Lily Keck (La Jolla, Calif.), sophomore Dagmara Czajka (San Diego, Calif.), and freshman Zoe King (Almaden, Calif.) each scored a goal. Keck dished out two assists and Czajka came up with two steals.

In the cage, sophomore goalkeeper Marley Presiado (Newport Beach, Calif.) made nine saves.

The Bears opened the game with a 3-1 lead behind two goals from Klein and a marker from Dvonch. A goal from Perez kept Brown ahead 4-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Goals from Czajka and Pisani in the second quarter staked the Bears to a 6-3 lead at halftime.

The Bears took the third quarter, 5-2, extending their margin to 11-5. Perez and Cook started the quarter’s scoring prior to three straight goals from Klein, Pisani, and King to close the stanza.

Brown closed the contest with a 3-1 fourth quarter behind tallies from Klein, Keck and Dvonch.

Klein and freshman Lily Weiser (Long Beach, Calif.) each netted a hat trick, senior goalkeeper Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) made 11 saves, and Brown topped Siena, 14-3, in its second game of the day on Friday night.

The Bears held a 7-2 lead at halftime and outscored the Saints, 7-1, in the second half for the final margin.

Klein and Weiser paced Brown with three goals apiece, while Perez tallied two goals and three assists. Dvonch notched two goals and two assists.

Senior Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.), Cook and freshmen Linnea Kelly (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Pisani each netted one goal. Freshman Bryn Gioffredi (Laguna Beach, Calif.) added two assists and two steals.

In the cage, Burns stopped 11 shots for her first double-figure save performance of the season.

The Bears opened the game with a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter behind two goals from Perez and single markers from Klein, Weiser, and Dvonch. Goals from Klein and Dvonch gave the Bears a 7-2 edge at halftime.

Brown outscored Siena 4-1 in the third quarter, moving the margin to 11-3. Weiser netted two goals in the frame while Klein and Atwell each chipped in a tally. Weiser, Kelly, and Pisani each tacked on a goal in the fourth quarter as the Bears’ defense blanked the Saints in the frame.
