PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Brown University reeled off a 4-2 scoring advantage in the third quarter to break a two-all halftime deadlock with George Washington University on the way to a 7-5 victory on the final day of the 2019 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship at Brown’s Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
Courtesy the win, Brown (21-13) clinches Fifth Place in the final seven-team tournament standings as the Bruins handled Saint Francis University, 13-8, during the evening of Saturday, April 27, to claim a three-team round robin between Brown, George Washington (6-15) and Saint Francis. Saint Francis takes Sixth Place as the Red Flash defeated George Washington by an 11-7 to begin competition yesterday on the second day of the tournament.
George Washington jumped out to a 2-0 lead by the end of the first quarter as Jaleh Moaddeli (So., Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar) and Alana Ponce (So., Gig Harbor, Wash./Gig Harbor) put away shots with 1:45 and 1:11 on the clock, respectively.
Brown delivered its response in the second quarter as Carissa Perez (So., Pico Rivera, Calif./La Serna) and Lily Keck (So., La Jolla, Calif./The Bishop’s School) punched in tallies at 6:57 and 2:24, respectively, to deadlock the squads at two-all going into halftime.
GW regained the lead 1:29 into the third quarter as Juliette Belanger (Fr., Ottawa, Canada/Ecole Seconaire Catholique Franco-Cite) zipped in a shot (6:31), but Katie Klein (Fr., Lafayette, Calif./Campolindo) responded at 6:01 to again balance the scoreboard at three-all.
Brown acquired the lead for the first time slightly over two minutes later as Maigrie McDougal (Sr., Sacramento, Calif./Rio Americano) cashed in a man-up chance at 3:53 to hand the Bruins a 4-3 lead.
The margin lasted for 31 seconds before Ponce pounded in an equalizer at 3:22.
Brown then pulled out in front for good as Perez (3:05, even-strength) and Kaitlyn Cook (So., Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos) (2:30, penalty shot) closed out the third quarter with back-to-back volleys to provide the Bruins a 6-4 lead going into the final eight minutes of action.
Keck widened the gap to three at 7-4 with 5:16 left in the fourth quarter prior to Belanger closing out the damage by swishing a shot at 3:07 to establish the 7-5 final score.
For Brown, Keck and Perez both scored twice, while McDougal, Klein and Cook each struck for single markers. In cage, Lauren Burns (Jr., Long Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) made 11 saves to earn the win and take Player of the Game laurels.
On the other end of the tank, Ponce and Belanger both chipped in pairs of scores for GW, while Moaddeli found the back of the cage once. Goalie Samantha Runyon (Jr., San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) took the loss with one save.
