BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Shauna Franke (So., La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla) made 45 saves with seven steals in five games as the No. 25-ranked Brown University Bears finished 4-2 at home in the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center during the Bruno Classic. For her performance, Franke is named both the February 7 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division I Rookie and Defensive Player of the Week.
Brown – which did not compete during the 2021 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic – opened the weekend by claiming a 12-10 defeat of California Baptist University on Friday, February 4, behind six saves from Franke. On Saturday, February, 5, the Bears turned back La Salle University, 9-8, with seven stops by Franke and upended Division III No. 1 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in overtime, 9-8, with 10 blocks by Franke.
The Bears wrapped up the weekend with a 15-7 defeat of Siena College on February 5 prior to taking 14-12 and 8-6 setbacks versus No. 17 Long Island University and No. 14 Wagner College, respectively, on Sunday, February 6.
