PROVIDENCE, R.I. — USA Water Polo announced Brown University men’s and women’s water polo head coach Felix Mercado was selected as the lead coach for Team USA Born in 2005 Futures Youth National Team.

Mercado returns to Team USA after serving as an assistant coach for Team USA during the 2019 World University Games in Naples, Italy.

“It is an honor to be selected as the lead coach for one of our national pipeline teams. I am excited to work with this group of young men and for the training opportunities we will experience over the summer,” said Mercado. 

Mercado will lead the Futures 2005 Youth Team into competition at the 2022 Men’s Senior Nationals Tournament on July 8-10 in Orange County, California. The team will then travel to Budapest, Hungary August 1-9 for a training trip and competition.

At Brown, Mercado just finished his 15th season as the head coach for the men’s and women’s water polo programs with both teams earning 20 or more wins this season. Mercado is also a member of the USA Water Polo’s Racial Equity & Reform Task Force. 

Mercado coached the men’s team to a third-place finish in the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Championship tournament, while leading the women’s team to a fourth-place finish in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division I Tournament.

This past season, Mercado coached two Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-America selections on the men’s side as Ugo Piovan and Andrew Penner were both named Honorable Mention. Piovan, Penner and Filip Aleksic were also named NWPC All-Conference with Aleksic being named Sophomore of the Year.

On the women’s side, Mercado coached Zoe King to a spot on the CWPA All-Conference First Team.
