LEWISBURG, Pa. — The Bucknell University women’s water polo team fell 9-7 to Saint Francis University in a tightly contested game on Senior Day. The Bison could not overcome a fourth-quarter deficit to pull out a non-conference victory.
Bucknell led 1-0 after the first quarter of play when Isabella Monaghan slammed home a score. The Bison defense kept the Red Flash from penetrating the goal.
It was a different tale in the second quarter as SFU went on a 3-0 run to seize a two-goal advantage. With ten seconds remaining before halftime, Boati Motau scored to narrow the margin to 3-2.
The third quarter heated up with the amount of scoring. SFU pushed to a 6-2 lead, but the Bison tallied two goals by Motau and Monaghan. However, the Red Flash scored two more goals for an 8-4 advantage.
The fourth quarter witnessed numerous opportunities. Chloe Smith celebrated Senior Day with a goal, but SFU quickly answered for a 9-5. Bucknell saw another goal from Monaghan for a 9-6 deficit. Both teams went cold for two minutes until Monaghan scored her fourth game of the game. The Bison had two more possessions, but the ball could not find the net as the Red Flash claimed a two-score win.
