BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Bucknell University’s Ally Furano (Fr., Stamford, Conn./The Ursuline School) recorded 11 goals and four assists for 15 points with seven ejections drawn and three steals in a 2-2 weekend for the No. 25-ranked Bison at Princeton University’s DeNunzio Pool in the final weekend of league competition to claim recognition as the April 16 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division I Player and co-Rookie of the Week.
She opened the weekend by racking up a goal, three assists, a steal and an ejection drawn in a 9-8 victory over No. 23 Harvard University on Saturday, April 14, prior to recording a goal with three ejections drawn in a 9-7 loss to Brown University.
On Sunday, April 15, she concluded the weekend by tallying six goals, two assists, an ejection drawn and a steal in a 13-5 defeat of George Washington University before notching three goals, two ejections drawn and a steal in a 12-5 loss to No. 10/host/CWPA regular season champion Princeton.
The weekend allowed the Bison to clinch the No 5 seed for the upcoming nine-team CWPA Championship at home in Kinney Natatorium on Friday-Sunday, April 27-29.
Furano, who raised her second scoring totals to 38 goals and 11 assists for 49 points, becomes the first Bucknell women’s water polo student-athlete to earn Player of the Week laurels since Hannah Sunday took the April 18, 2016 award. Further, she is inaugural Bison to collect a Rookie of the Week nod since Tegan Stanbach on April 28, 2014.
She shares the Rookie of the Week award with George Washington’s Alana Ponce (Fr., Gig Harbor, Wash./Gig Harbor) who posted 10 goals and seven assists for the Colonials over the weekend at Princeton.
