SPRINGFIELD, Ohio. — The Carthage College women’s water polo team fell to Division III No. 5-ranked Austin College, 19-3, and host Wittenberg University, 9-5, on Saturday-Sunday, March 26-27, during Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA)-West Region competition at the Wittenberg Natatorium.

After falling to Austin 19-3 on Saturday, March 26, the Firebirds got on the board first in their second game on Sunday, March 27, against Wittenberg as Alyssa Sayatovic scored at the 7:16 mark of the first. The Tigers retaliated, scoring three unanswered goals heading to the second. Sophie Flott and Sayatovic registered goals in the second, tying the game at three heading into halftime.

In the third quarter, Wittenberg scored four goals, then Taylor Woitesek registered her first goal of the day, shrinking the deficit to three at 7-4. The home team found the back of the net with 1:37 remaining as Wittenberg headed to the last quarter of play with an 8-4 margin. 

Katlynn LaGrone scored first for the Firebirds in the fourth, narrowing the gap to three, but could pull no closer in falling 9-5.
