Carthage College-vs.-Utica College Scoresheet
NEW LONDON, Conn. — Maddi Marsh (So., Irvine, Calif./Arnold O. Beckman) scored four times to claim Player of the Game notice and Meghan Fisher (Fr., Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) fired in a trio of tallies as Carthage College downed Utica College, 9-3, in the opening round of the 2019 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championship hosted by Connecticut College at the Jane Cadwell Lott ’36 Natatorium.
The Lady Reds (3-13) never trailed as Carthage opened up a 2-0 lead in the first quarter, carried a 3-1 margin into halftime and pushed its lead to 6-3 by the conclusion of the third quarter on the way to a six-goal win over the Pioneers (0-11).
Fisher and Marsh drew first blood for Carthage in the opening eight minutes of action as the pair ripped in natural (6:23) and man-up (5:31) markers, respectively, to stake the Lady Reds to a lead they would never relinquish.
Hnyla Sloan (Sr., Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) put Utica on the board with 5:02 left in the second quarter via a five-meter penalty shot, but Fisher found the back of the cage for her second strike of the contest with 2:15 left in the first half to return Carthage’s lead to a pair (3-1) entering the halftime break.
Marsh and Sophie Flott (Fr., Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) cushioned the spread to 5-1 with back-to-back goals at 4:48 and 3:01, respectively, to begin the third quarter before Sloan and Emily Czerwonka (Jr., Souderton, Pa./Souderton) delivered answers for the Pioneers with 2:48 and 22 seconds on the clock, respectively, to trim Utica’s deficit down to 5-3.
The remainder of the contest belonged to Carthage as Fisher closed out the third quarter with a strike at the four seconds mark before Marsh (6:25, 3:42) and Flott (20 seconds) rattled the iron with three consecutive scores in the fourth quarter to establish the 9-3 final score.
For Carthage, Flott finished with a pair of goals to join Fisher and Marsh in the scoring column. Emma Jeronimus (Jr., Hoffman Estates, Ill./Fremd) recorded 11 saves in cage to earn the victory as Carthage punches its ticket to a 7:15 p.m. clash tonight against CWPA Division III-East Region champion Grove City College in the tournament quarterfinals.
Utica, which falls into an 11:15 a.m. game on Saturday, April 13, versus the loser of a first-round matchup pitting the Fighting Scots of Monmouth College versus the host Camels of Connecticut College, received two goals from Sloan and a solo marker by Czerwonka. In cage, Michalyn Winkler (Sr., Barto, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) made 21 saves in suffering the loss.
