SALEM, W.Va. — Salem University women’s water polo student-athlete Chloe Woodbine claimed the 2020-21 Dr. Keith Bullion Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to a junior biology major with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50. Woodbine becomes the first Tiger student-athlete from an aquatics sports to receive the scholarship in the four-year history of the award.

The scholarship is named for the late Dr. Keith Bullion, who was a science professor at Salem University and head of the biology department. Dr. Bullion also coached the school’s men’s water polo and swimming teams.  The Salem men’s water polo record holder for career and single-season wins, he leads his son and current Salem head men’s water polo coach Robert Bullion by five career victories.

“Chloe has worked very hard in the water and in the classroom, and has glowing remarks from the faculty in the biology department,” said Robert Bullion. “My father would be happy to see the level of student that the biology program here at Salem is producing. He also wouldn’t mind seeing an aquatics athlete getting this award for the first time.”

A junior from Brisbane, Australia, Woodbine has a perfect 4.0 GPA majoring in biology/exercise science and physiology. She has earned All-Academic honors from both the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) and the Association of College Water Polo Coaches in each of her two years at Salem after transferring from Hartwick College. She was also named to the 2020 All-WWPA First Team and earned WWPA Player of the Week honors the final week of the 2020 season.

“I am beyond proud of Chloe for maintaining a 4.0 GPA in her time in the biology program and setting an example for her teammates to follow,” said Salem head women’s water polo coach Justin Kassab. “She is a keystone piece of our team both in and out of the water, always leading by example and always there to help her teammates in all aspects. Chloe is the type of person that just by her presence makes those around her better.”

“Chloe is beyond deserving of any accolades that she receives,” added Kassab.

A formal award presentation will be conducted at a Salem water polo competition during the spring.
