BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) officials Alex Stankevitch and Joe Peila were selected to officiate the 30th Summer World University Games on July 3-14, 2019, in Naples, Italy.
The selection marks the the third time the duo will call the World University Games/Universiade which is “an international multi-sport event organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The Universiade is staged every two years in a different city around the world, representing both winter and summer competitions and is second only in importance to the Olympic Games.”
It will mark the fourth time the Universiade is hosted in Italy following previous events in 1959 (Turin), 1975 (Rome) and 1997 (Sicily). Historically, Italy, Bulgaria (1961 – Sofia; 1977 – Sofia), Brazil (1963 – Porto Alegre), Hungary (1965 – Budapest), Japan (1967 – Tokyo; 1985 – Kobe; 1995 – Fukuoka), the Soviet Union (1973 – Moscow), Mexico (1979 – Mexico City), Romania (1981 – Bucharest), Canada (1983 – Edmonton), Yugoslavia (1987 – Zagreb), West Germany (1989 – Duisburg), the United Kingdom (1991 – Sheffield), the United States (1993 – Buffalo), Spain (1999 – Palma de Mallorca), China (2001 – Beijing; 2011 – Shenzhen), South Korea (2003 – Daegu; 2015 – Gwangju), Turkey (2005 – Izmir), Thailand (2007 – Bangkok), Serbia (2009 – Belgrade), Russia (2013 – Kazan) and Chinese Taipei (2017 – Taipei) have hosted since 1961 with Chengdu in China slated to host in 2021.
