BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Defending National Champion the University of Southern California retains a narrow lead over Stanford University to maintain status as the top-ranked team as the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) releases the 2022 Week 1/January 26 Women’s Varsity National Top 25, Division III Top 10, CWPA Top Five and CWPA Division III Top Five Polls.
Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, the University of Michigan and Austin College continue as the top-ranked teams in the Division III Top 10, CWPA Top Five and CWPA Division III Top Five Polls with one week gone in the 2022 campaign.
Voted on by a panel of coaches from the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), the Golden Coast Conference, the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the Big West Conference, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and the CWPA based on the cumulative results of the season, the polls are compiled and released on Wednesday during the season.
2022 Women’s Varsity National Top 25 (Week 1)
The University of Southern California continues as the No. 1 team in the nation as the Trojans lead the Week 1/January 26 National Top 25 Poll.
USC (98 points) increases its point total by one this week – after achieving 97 points in the preseason voting – to expand its margin to two points over Stanford University (96 points). The University of California-Los Angeles (93 points) hangs on at No. 3 as the remainder of the Top 25 shifts dramatically after the opening weekend of competition.
The University of California (89 points) and the University of Hawaii (84 points) both move up one place to take over at No. 4 and 5, respectively, while the University of Michigan (80 points) leaps the University of California-Irvine (76 points) to acquire possession of the No. 6 spot. UC-Irvine rates at No. 7 with Fresno State University (72 points) marching up the rankings to take over at No. 8.
Arizona State University (64 points) – which ranked at No. 4 last week – slips to No. 9 with Indiana University (57 points) cracking the Top 10. Indiana and Michigan’s presence in the Top 10 marks the first time since Michigan and Princeton University tied for 10th in the Week 15/April 25 poll during the 2018 season that two teams East of Tempe have rated 10th or higher.
The University of California-San Diego (55 points) drops back to No. 11 with San Jose State University (54 points) rising four places to No. 12.
Long Beach State University (50 points) and the University of California-Davis (50 points) are tied at No. 13 with University of the Pacific (46 points) and the University of California-Santa Barbara (38 points) adjusting to No. 15 and 16.
Wagner College (36 points) moves up six places to tie Loyola Marymount University (36 points) at No. 17 with San Diego State University (34 points) and Princeton (28 points) rounding out the Top 20.
Harvard University (22 points), Marist College (12 points) and California State University-Northridge (8 points) rate at No. 21-to-23, respectively, with the trio of Brown University (6 points), Bucknell University (6 points) and California Baptist University (6 points) tying at No. 24 to wrap-up the Top 25.

Preseason favorite Pomona-Pitzer Colleges continues at No. 1 in the 2022 Women’s Varsity Division III Week 1/January 26 Top 10 Poll.
Pomona-Pitzer (98 points), California Lutheran University (95 points), Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (88 points) and Whittier College (83 points) remain at No. 1-to-4, respectively, while Chapman University (79 points) breaks a tie with the University of Redlands (73 points) to gain sole custody of the No. 5 spot.
Redlands, the University of La Verne (72 points), Austin College (70 points) and Occidental College (61 points) rate at No. 6-to-9 with Macalester College (23 points) replacing Wittenberg University (22 points) at No. 10.

Five-time defending Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Champion the University of Michigan once again leads the league rankings in the 2022 CWPA Division I Week 1/January 26 Top Five Poll.
The 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021 league champion, Michigan (100 points) is a unanimous No. 1 selection and retains a five-point lead over runner-up Princeton University (95 points).
Harvard University (90 points), Bucknell University (83 points) and Brown University (49 points) complete the Top Five as the rankings remain consistent with the preseason voting.

The ‘Roos (100 points) continue as a unanimous No. 1 pick following a 2021 season in which Austin downed Wittenberg University to claim the program’s inaugural league championship.
Wittenberg (95 points), Grove City College (84 points), Macalester College (69 points) and Penn State Behrend (49 points) complete the Top Five as the rankings remain unchanged from the preseason voting.
