BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) releases a revised 2017 Women’s Collegiate Club Texas Division Championship schedule for the event on Saturday-Sunday, April 8-9, at Rice University‘s Gibbs Recreation & Wellness Center in Houston, Texas.
The schedule adjusts from an eight-team format to a seven-team one following the exclusion of Texas Christian University for the remainder of the season after not competing on the weekend of March 25-26 at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.
The format adjusts as the teams will now compete in bracket play on Saturday, April 8, prior to the placement games on Sunday, April 9.
Comprised of Baylor University, Rice, Texas A&M “A”, Texas A&M “B”, Texas State University, Texas Tech University and the University of Texas , the Texas Division will advance its champion to the Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship on Friday-Sunday, May 5-7, at the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pa.
In the history of the division, Texas and Texas A&M have been the dominant squads of late as the Longhorns (2002, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2016) and Aggies (2001, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2015) have combined for all of the championships since 2007. Overall, only three teams have captured a Texas Division title as Rice claimed the 2004, 2005 and 2006 crowns.
In terms of championship game appearances, Texas A&M (2001, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016), Texas (2001, 2002, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016), Rice (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006), Texas State (2012, 2015), Baylor (2005) and former division member Trinity University (2004) have all played for the title.
