NEW LONDON, Conn. – Seniors Stephania Lopez (Chicago, Ill.) and Brooklynn Hayes (Granville, Mass.) combined for 17 goals as the Connecticut College women’s water polo team swept a home doubleheader against Utica College at Lott Natatorium. The Camels, who were competing against outside competition for the first time in more than a year, won by scores of 12-2 and 17-5.

In the earlier game, Connecticut College scored the first six goals and never looked back on the way to a 12-2 victory. Utica finally got on the board with 6:35 remaining in the second quarter when Kate Anderson found the back of the net. The Camels, however, went on a 5-0 run and did not allow another goal until the waning minutes of the fourth quarter.

Hayes finished with four goals and Lopez had a hat trick.

Defensively, Olivia Fechner-Lewis (Berkeley, Calif.) made nine saves.

Following a short rest, the Camels remained strong throughout the second game and led from wire-to-wire.

Lopez scored twice to kickstart the offense, and the hosts most notably outscored their opponent, 6-1, in the second quarter and led by a comfortable 10-3 margin at halftime. Connecticut College then exploded by scoring seven goals in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 17-5 win.

Lopez tallied six goals, while Hayes and Claudia Marmelo (Westport, Conn.) each added four apiece. Fechner-Lewis recorded eight saves between the posts.
