ERIE, Pa — Becca Dabrowski (Jr., McHenry, Ill./West) scored eight times to notch Player of the Game honors as the Monmouth College Fighting Scots outpointed Utica College, 15-3, in the Seventh Place game of the 2018 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championship hosted by Penn State Behrend at the David M. Hallman Aquatics Center.
The regular season runner-up, Monmouth (7-9, 7-3 CWPA Division III) records its second seventh finish at the CWPA Division III Championship following previous Sixth (2016, 2017), Seventh (2014) and Eighth (2015) Place marks.
Utica (0-14, 0-10 CWPA Division III) never led in the game as Monmouth opened up a 2-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to Miranda Pasky (Fr., Paso Robles, Calif./Paso Robles) netting a man-up strike at 5:51 prior to Dabrowski posting an even-strength tally at 5:20.
The Pioneers rallied back to even the score at two-all as Daniela Hannah (So., Dalton, Ga./Northwest Whitfield) cut the Fighting Scots’ lead in half at 5:02 before Krystiana Rehrig (Sr., Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) balanced the scoreboard with 2:45 remaining in the opening frame.
Monmouth regained the lead for good prior to the concluding horn of the first quarter as Dabrowski found the back of the cage with 31 seconds left to make it 3-2.
The goal commenced a 4-0 run by Monmouth as Dabrowski tacked on markers with 7:41 and 4:14 left in the second quarter to sandwich a score by Rachel Unger (Sr., Lockport, Ill./Lockport) at 5:25 in building the margin to 6-2.
Utica refused to go away as the team chipped a goal off its deficit via a successful volley by Ashley Flint (Jr., Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) to move within 6-3. However, the goal marked the Pioneers final strike of the contest as Monmouth scored twice in the remaining time of the first half to carry an 8-3 lead into the break, racked up four more goals in the third quarter and recorded three markers in the fourth quarter to comprise a 9-0 run in establishing the 15-3 final.
For Monmouth, Brittany Lira (So., Midlothian, Ill./Bremen) and Unger joined Dabrowski in posting multi-goal games as the duo both found the back of the cage twice. Pasky, Esther Hubbard (So., Sandy, Ore./Sandy Union) and Brenna Bowers (Sr., New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) chipped in solo tallies, while goalie Natalie Curtis (Sr., Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) earned the win with 12 saves between the pipes.
Utica, which previously earned Sixth (2014, 2015), Seventh (2012, 2013), eighth (2011, 2016, 2017) and Ninth (2010) in the eight prior CWPA Division III tournaments, wraps-up 2018 in the eighth position of the eight-team championship event.
The trio of Hannah, Flint and Rehrig accounted for the Pioneers’ offense, while goalie Michalyn Winkler (Jr., Barto, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) made 13 saves in taking the loss.
