BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) alumni Ashleigh Johnson of Princeton University, Bronwen Knox of Hartwick College, Shae Fournier and Jessica Gaudreault of Indiana University along with current University of Michigan standout Maddy Steere (Jr., Pascoe Vale, Australia/St. Catherine’s School) and official Michael Goldenberg played a part on Day 3 of women’s competition at the 2019 FINA World Championships in Gwangju, Korea, on Thursday, July 18.

Johnson combined with Amanda Longan for seven saves as the United States National Team stopped South Africa, 26-1, to finish 3-0 and claim the Bracket A crown following wins over the Netherlands (22-9 W) and New Zealand (22-3 W). The victory marked their 50th straight W for the United States dating back to April of 2018 and is believed to be the longest win streak in the Olympic era of women’s water polo.

Knox and Steere did not post a notable statistic in a 9-7 win by Australia over Japan in Bracket D.  The victory improves Australia to 2-1 and a second place finish in the bracket as the team fell to Italy, 10-8, and managed China, 14-12, earlier in the tournament.

For Canada, both Fournier and goalie Gaudreault scored as the squad defeated Korea, 22-2, to place third in Bracket B.  The victory marks Canada’s first at the event as the team previously fell to Russia (18-10 L) and Hungary (15-14 L).

On the deck, Goldenberg officiated the Canada-Korea game.  It marked his fifth assignment at the FINA Championships following an 8-6 victory by China over Japan in women’s action on July 14, a 9-9 tie between Japan and Germany in men’s competition on July 15, Australia’s 14-12 defeat of China on July 16 and a 13-11 win by Hungary against Spain in men’s play on July 17.

Following the conclusion of bracket play, Australia and Canada will next be in action on Saturday, July 20, at Nambu University Grounds as Australia faces Bracket C Third Place finisher Kazakhstan and Canada squares off with Bracket A runner-up the Netherlands.  The United States, on the strength of capturing Bracket A, earns a automatic berth to the qurterfinals on July 22 against an opponent to be determined.
