BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) alumni Bronwen Knox of Hartwick College, Shae Fournier and Jessica Gaudreault of Indiana University along with current University of Michigan standout Maddy Steere (Jr., Pascoe Vale, Australia/St. Catherine’s School) and official Michael Goldenberg played a part on Day 4 of women’s competition at the 2019 FINA World Championships in Gwangju, Korea, on Saturday, July 20.
Knox and Steere aided Australia in taking down Kazakhstan, 13-3, to earn a spot in the tournament quarterfinals against Russia on Monday, July 22.
For Canada, both Fournier and goalie Gaudreault aided their nation in a 5-4 loss to the Netherlands. The defeat drops Canada into the 9-12 round of the tournament as the squad can finish no higher than Ninth Place in the final standings. Canada will next be in action on July 22 against China.
On the deck, Goldenberg did not officiate a women’s game on July 20, but did pick up his sixth assignment at the FINA Championships following an 8-6 victory by China over Japan in women’s action on July 14, a 9-9 tie between Japan and Germany in men’s competition on July 15, a 14-12 win by Australia over China on July 16 in women’s competition, a 13-11 win by Hungary against Spain in men’s play on July 17 and a 22-2 victory by the Canadian women against Korea on July 18 by calling a 23-5 men’s win on Friday, July 19, by Hungary against South Africa.
The United States and Princeton University alum Ashleigh Johnson, which earned a bye into the tournament quarterfinals by capturing Bracket A, will next be in action on July 22 against Greece.
