George Washington University-vs.-Brown University Scoresheet (PDF)

LEWISBURG, Pa. — Jessica Heilman (Sr., Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo Atherton) scored four times to collect Player of the Game laurels as Brown University eclipsed George Washington University, 9-3, to start the second day of competition at the 2018 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Women’s Varsity Championship hosted at Bucknell University’s Kinney Natatorium.

Courtesy the win, Brown (16-17, 3-5 CWPA) avenges an 8-7 loss to the Colonials (13-15, 3-5 CWPA) in the regular season finale for both teams on April 14 at Princeton University’s DeNunzio Pool.  The loss to George Washington dropped the Bears into the No. 7 seed in the championship field, while giving Bucknell and George Washington the No. 5 and 6 spots, respectively.

The Bears never trailed against the Colonials in their second meeting of the 2018 season as McKenna Miller (Jr., Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) launched in a penalty shot just 27 seconds into the game to stake Brown to an early 1-0 lead.

George Washington pulled even as Alana Ponce (Fr., Gig Harbor, Wash./Gig Harbor) pounded in a six-on-five chance at the 5:56 mark, but back-to-back-to-back blows by Heilman (4:49, even-strength; 20 seconds, even-strength) and Maigrie McDougal (Jr., Sacramento, Calif./Rio Americano) (2:42, man-up) returned the lead to Brown and pumped the margin to 4-1 by the conclusion of the opening quarter.

Neither team scored again until the 3:49 mark of the second quarter when Carmen Rosas (Jr., Schaumburg, Ill./James B. Conant) pushed the Bears’ scoreboard advantage to 5-1 with a natural marker.  Lexi Atwell (So., La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla) further insulated the spread to 6-1 prior to the halftime horn by beating George Washington goalie Samantha Runyon (So., San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) at the 44 seconds mark.

Brown’s offense slowed down in the second half as Heilman notched the sole third quarter score by finding the back of the cage with 6:57 on the clock to complete a hat-trick and make it 7-1.

Atwell (7:10, man-up) and Heilman (6:31 even-strength) completed the Bears’ offensive exploits by putting away fourth quarter shots and make it 9-1.

George Washington trimmed its deficit down to six prior to the game’s concluding buzzer as Emma Shaffer (So., Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and Katherine Atherton (Fr., Los Altos, Calif./Mountain View) cranked off successful even-strength shots with 1:46 and 54 seconds to go, respectively, for the 9-3 final score.

For Brown, Heilman led the way with four tallies, while Atwell contributed a pair.  Miler, Rosas and McDougal each tacked on solo markers to go along with a 13 save effort by goalie Marisol Dakan (Sr., Pasadena, Calif./La Salle).

Shaffer, Ponce and Atherton each scored once for GW with Runyon making six saves in taking the loss.

Brown can now finish no lower than Sixth Place in the final tournament standings as the Bears will compete in the Fifth Place game at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 29, against the victor of a consolation game pitting No. 23 Harvard University versus Bucknell University.

Overall, Brown has previously placed first (2001), second (2003), fourth (2004, 2009, 2012), fifth (2000, 2007, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015), sixth (2002, 2010), seventh (2005, 2016, 2017) and ninth (2011) since 2000.

George Washington slides into a consolation game at 6:00 p.m. this evening as the Colonials will take on Saint Francis University.  The winner of the GW-SFU game advances into the Seventh Place game at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 29, while the loser has their 2018 season draw to a close with a Ninth Place finish in the nine-team field.

In the history of the tournament, the Colonials have previously finished seventh (2003), eighth (2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016), ninth (2012, 2017) and 10th (2000) in past attempts for the league title and automatic berth to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Women’s Water Polo Championship
