MONMOUTH, Ill. — Freshman Stephania Lopez (Chicago, Ill.) scored a combined eight goals as the Connecticut College women’s water polo team swept a pair of league games at a Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III weekend tournament hosted by Monmouth College. The Camels clipped Washington & Jefferson College, 16-10, before earning a 9-5 victory over Carthage College.

The victories guarantee the Camels can finish no lower than third in the regular season standings and will compete at the CWPA Division III Championship as either the No. 2 or 3 seed depending on the outcome of Connecticut’s final regular season league game versus Grove City College.  A Connecticut victory, combined with losses by Monmouth to both Washington & Jefferson and Carthage, will give the Camels the No. 2 seed for the CWPA Division III Championship.

Facing the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson, Connecticut surrendered the first goal before rattling off six straight against to never look back on the way to a six-goal victory.

Senior Sophia Soriano (Summerland, Calif.) scored four times during the hot stretch to put the Camels in control before classmate Shannon Cry (Monterey, Calif.) and sophomore Ginny McCool (Delray Beach, Fla.) each scored twice during a six-goal third quarter to allow Connecticut College to come away with the win.

Taking on Carthage, the Camels never trailed as McCool netted consecutive goals to break a 1-1 tie and give the her team the momentum moving forward. Lopez then scored five goals, including four in the second frame alone, and senior Sarah Nappo (Portland, Maine) made eight saves between the posts to help the team eventually come away with the four-goal win.
