NEW LONDON, Conn. — The duo of Oriana Galasso (Fr., Gresham, Ore./Barlow) and Lucille Moran (So., Ann Arbor, Mich/Huron) combined for 10 goals by tallying five markers a piece as the Division III No. 10-ranked Scots of Macalester College went into four-time defending Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Champion Connecticut College’s Jane Cadwell Lott Natatorium and came away with a 12-4 defeat of the host Camels during a league regular season weekend.
The Scots fell behind early to the Camels as Sophia Soriano (Jr., Summerland, Calif./Cate School) stuffed in a tally at 4:48 and April Anderson (Jr., Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) finished a man-up chance at 1:45 to surround a score by Moran at 4:27 to stake Connecticut to leads of 1-0 and 2-1, respectively, in the early going.
Following some early faltering, Macalester got its offensive footing and turned the tide over the remainder of the first quarter behind their dynamic duo as Moran and Galasso deposited balls into the back of the cage with 1:04 and 30 seconds on the clock to turn a one goal deficit into a 3-2 lead after eight minutes of action.
Moran completed a hat-trick 26 into the second quarter to widen the gap to 4-2 before wrapping up her offensive exploits with a five-meter penalty shot at 3:54 following a penalty and misconduct on Connecticut’s Hannah Rogers (Fr., Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) and an even-strength blast at 3:08 for a 6-2 Scots’ lead at halftime.
Natalie Hoffman (So., Seattle, Wash./Inglemoor) further padded the lead to 7-2 33 seconds into the third quarter before Anderson brought a close to Macalester’s 6-0 scoring run at 6:23 with a strike of her own to move the Camels back to within four at 7-3.
Brianna Harrity (Sr., Jeffersonville, Pa./Germantown Academy) shaved the margin down to 7-4 at 5:48 by cashing in on a six-on-five bid, but Galasso answered slightly over a minute later at 4:43 to give Macalester back a four-goal lead at 8-4 entering the fourth quarter.
The Scots put any doubts of the eventual victor to rest in the first 4:11 of the final eight minutes as Cara Mullery (Fr., Palmetto Bay, Fla./MAST Academy) curled in a natural goal at 6:23 before Galasso gassed the Camels with back-to-back-to-back strikes at 6:03, 5:20 and 3:49 as Macalester outscored Connecticut 5-0 down the stretch for the 12-4 win.
For the Scots, Hoffman and Mullery both scored once to join with Galasso and Moran for all the offense goalie Courtney Overland (So., Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani) would need to down the 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 CWPA Division III Champions.
On the other side of the tank, Anderson keyed the Camels’ attack with a pair of goals. Sophia Soriano and Harrity both chipped in single tallies, while Sarah Sovia (Sr., Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) took the loss between the pipes.
