CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Harvard University men’s water polo team wrapped up its trip to California with a narrow a 12-11 loss at the hands of Division III No. 2-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges. The Crimson – which fall to 5-6 on the season – got five goals from Dean Strausser in the effort but fell after the Stags scored a last second goal to take the win.
The Crimson opened up an early 5-1 lead on the Stags in the first quarter of play but CMS mounted a comeback effort to take a 9-8 lead – its first of the game – in the third quarter. After another pair of goals went to the Stags, Harvard roared back to tie the game at 11-all with three consecutive goals from Strausser, Jack Burghardt and Mason Hunt. With the game tied at 11, CMS retook possession and struck the final blow with a goal by Gavin Netherton as the regulation buzzer sounded.
Strausser led the team with five goals, while Burghardt netted three tallies. Mason Hunt and Vilas Sogaard-Srikrishnan notched solo strikes.
Tanner Furtak made 10 saves in goal and Tyler Hogan made four steals in the effort.
