PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Division III No. 3-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges used an 8-1 outburst in the second quarter to acquire a 10-3 lead by halftime as the Athenas downed Division No. 10 Austin College, 14-4, to conclude the opening day of competition at Brown University’s Bruno Classic.

The Kangaroos gained an early 1-0 lead 30 seconds into the showdown of Division III ranked programs, but CMS knotted the score at one-all thirty seconds later.  Austin went back out in front with 5:15 left in the opening quarter of action, but Claremont-Mudd-Scripps squared the score at two pairs with 54 seconds remaining in the first eight minutes of competition to deadlock the squads at two-all heading into the second quarter.

The games eventual outcome was decided over the next eight minutes as CMS ripped off an 8-1 scoring outburst to pull ahead 10-3 by halftime. Leading 12-3 at the end of the third quarter after blanking the ‘Roos, CMS finished off the game by outscoring Austin 2-1 over the final minutes of the game to attain a 14-4 win.
