VILLANOVA, Pa. — Sophomore Alex Hwang scored four times to claim Player of the Game recognition and junior Miguel Hernandez added three more strikes as Division III No. 3 the United States Coast Guard Academy of the Colonial Division defended its national ranking by topping Division III No. 7 Bates College of the North Atlantic Division, 12-6, in the Third Place game of the 2019 Men’s Division III Collegiate Club Championship hosted at Villanova University.
- The Bears never trailed against the Bobcats as Coast Guard built a 4-0 lead by the conclusion of the first quarter and held a 5-0 margin with 6:27 left in the second frame. Leading 7-4 at halftime, Coast Guard continued to pull away by outscoring Bates 3-1 and 2-1 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, on the way to a 12-6 win.
- Following the first quarter, Bates moved striking distance of the Coast Guard only once as the Bobcats chipped their deficit down to three goals (7-4) at the break. However, the Bears connected on back-to-back goals to start the third quarter to sink hopes of a comeback.
- For Coast Guard, Hwang (four), Hernandez (three) and sophomore Ryan Weeks (three) combined for 10 of the Bears’ 12 goals with sophomore Gabe Moreno accounting for the other two.
- In cage, senior Owen Kratowicz made nine saves to earn the win for Coast Guard. Charlie Nadel (So., Westport, Conn.) took the loss for Bates with six stops.
- Jem Bullock (Sr., Bainbridge Island, Wash.) (three) and James Calhoon (Jr., Menlo Park, Calif.) (two) posted multi-goal games for Bates, while Ryan Fisse (So., Los Altos, Calif.) chipped in a solo marker.
- Making the program’s fifth appearance at the Division III Club Championship, Coast Guard’s Third Place mark establishes a new high for the Bears after previously taking Fourth Place in 2008 at Villanova, Sixth Place in 2012 at Middlebury College, Seventh Place in 2017 at Middlebury and Fifth Place last year at Wesleyan University.
- Bates earns its second consecutive Fourth Place finish at the Division III Club Championship after previously taking Fifth (2000), 10th (2001), Seventh (2002), Third (2017) and Fourth (2018) in the program’s previous trips to the event.
