VILLANOVA, Pa. — Tori Chen (So, San Jose, Calif.) proved to be a one-woman wrecking crew as the Player of the Game pumped in 11 goals as Division III No. 6-ranked Carnegie Mellon University stopped Division III No. 9 Grinnell College, 19-3, in the second game of Bracket A action on the first day of the 2019 Women’s Division III Collegiate Club Championship hosted by Villanova University.
- The Tartans torched the Fireballs for four goals in the first quarter and raced out to a 10-0 margin in the second quarter before Grinnell responded as the teams entered halftime with Carnegie Mellon holding an 11-1 lead.
- 3-1 and 5-1 scoring advantages in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, finished out the game as Carnegie Mellon grabbed a lead with 5:58 left in the first quarter and never trailed to take the 16-goal victory.
- For Grinnell, Olivia Konieczny (So., Elk Grove Village, Ill.) accounted for all of her team’s offense by punching in single goals in the second, third and fourth quarters.
- Chen accounted for the majority of Carnegie Mellon’s scoring, while Greta Markey (Fr., Western Springs, Ill.) tacked on four goals. Sofia Zayas (Jr., Ponce, P.R.) put away a pair to go along with solo markers from Annalisa Pao (Fr., Seattle, Wash.) and Ophelie Tousignant (So, Darien, Conn.).
- Carnegie Mellon converted on one-of-two man-up chances, while Grinnell failed to convert on its trio of power-play opportunities.
- The win improves Carnegie Mellon to 1-0 in Bracket A, while Grinnell falls to 0-2 to earn Third Place in the bracket. Due to the third place finish, the Fireballs will play the Third Place finisher from Bracket B at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 28, in the tournament’s Fifth Place game.
