WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Wheaton College women’s water polo team was overcome by Division III No. 6-ranked Macalester College, 14-1, at Washington & Jefferson College’s Henry Natatorium in both teams’ final Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III regular season game.
The Lyons drop to 0-16, while the Scots improve to 12-5.
First year center Avary Guge (Winchester, Calif.) posted a goal and added three steals. Sophomore attacker Ryanna Ritting (Perkasie, Pa.) led the Lyons’ defensive effort in the field with a team-high six steals, while first year attacker Claudia Gagné (Orlando, Fla.) came up with a pair of thefts. First year goalie Anduena Kraja (Chicago, Ill.) stopped 12 shots for Wheaton.
Sophomore Mak Kratz (Northbrook, Ill.) led Macalester with a game-high three goals, while first year utility player Alice Lemmon (Evanston, Ill.) added a pair of goals. Junior attacker Hannah Fasi (Honolulu, Hawaii), first year attacker Katie Martin (Bryn Athyn, Pa.) and senior utility player Jess Palmer-Sammons (Half Moon Bay, Calif.) each tallied two markers on the day for the Scots.
Macalester held the Lyons scoreless through the first three quarters of play, while scoring 11 times. Lemmon scored the third of three goals of the first quarter to give the Scots a 3-0 lead after eight minutes. Macalester matched the output with three more markers in the second quarter, including a score from Fasi to give the Scots a six-goal advantage with 1:25 remaining in the first half.
Macalester netted all five goals of the third quarter to increase its margin to 11-0, paced by a pair of goals from Palmer-Sammons.
Guge cracked the scoring column for Wheaton with the first goal of the fourth quarter, coming just 26 seconds into the frame to cut the deficit to 11-1. The Scots closed out the contest with three straight markers to come away with a 14-1 victory.
